Tamron 18-200mm VC iii lens with a street price of around $549. Available for Sony E Mount and in the tested version for Canon EOS M Mount. This was tested with the Canon EOS M3 Mirrorless camera. I was excited to test this all around shooter at a premium price point from Tamron. Out of the box this lens clearly had some heft (weighed in at 1 pound 1.6 oz fully dressed with caps+hood on my scale), but weighing in at less than some other 18-200mm lenses (Sony’s 18-200mm for example).
Focus is buttery smooth. I also found the low light capability of this lens to be really excellent. Normally this is an area that can trap similarly sized lenses. Tamron touts the VC capability of this lens, and I found it to work quite well. They say it “employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance that eliminates the blur from handheld shots for cleaner, crisper shots.” I also found this lens even after repeated shooting to generally lack any lens creep (I’m looking at you canon EFS 18-200MM), which is nice not to deal with, especially if you are doing any angled shooting.
I would highly recommend this lens and give it a 4.5/5 star review. Only drawback I see is the price-but with comparable all around lenses at over $500, this lens is in the ballpark.
